There are three types of characters at XIII PROMISES. They are not groups but the division into where you are in relation to the Devil and how many deals you have made.

The initiated are former students at a prestigious university, who made their deal with the Devil 13 years ago and moved on to various forms of success in their life. They have all gotten what they wanted in life, but have also paid a heavy price for it. 

The Devil granted them all wonderful powers from being able to seduce whomever they wished to always being the most interesting person in a room. But now the gifts have begun to falter. Their indiscretions are catching up with them and their victims are not bending to their will as easily any more.

They are returning to the crossroads to once again bargain with the Devil and reunite with their old friends, foes and lovers.

The initiated comprise the majority of the characters at XIII PROMISES.

Examples are:

• the successful actor, who struggles with crippling insecurity in their private life.

• the successful political Machiavellian back-room schemer, who was granted cleverness and guile but who will never again be as popular as they were as a youth. 

• the popular poster person for a political party who will never be able to shape their own fate.

The novices have been swept up by someone fascinating and brought along to the crossroads. They might know what is awaiting them - or they might be completely unaware of what they are getting themselves into. No matter what, they will quickly be swept up in the dreams of getting whatever they desire - and naively not consider the price to be paid. 

The novices will be the second smallest group of characters at XIII PROMISES.

Examples are:

• the high-end escort paid to accompany their mistress on a holiday who dreams of an independent life.

• the middle-manager who have performed horrible acts on behalf of their boss but believe they will finally get the promotion they have worked tirelessly to achieve.
   

The fallen are lost, depraved and hollow. They have already made more than one deal with the Devil and have betrayed themselves and thrown old partners and lovers to the wayside during their life. They are desperate and cling to the hope that the Devil will once again agree to extending their deal and let them continue on indulging their vices. The fallen led the initiated in the ritual 13 years ago and comprise the smallest group of characters at XIII PROMISES.

Examples are: 

• the genius composer that is hated by everyone and always sleeps with the new men and women in the symphonic orchestra they lead. 

• The disillusioned Reverend Mother that bargained with the Devil to be able to charm any man or woman she desired, only for the price of her bargain to be locked away in a remote Catholic nunnery.
